Day 1 in Finland Arrival Our journey started out from Dublin airport were I decided to sketch various people in various areas going to, and from place to place. I liked the atmosphere at Dublin airport as it was busy and full of life something i tried to capture in some rough sketches I did in my notebook. After that we boarded the plane and I got to hear Finnish being spoken by Finnish people for the first time. I also noticed how quiet and contained the cabin was. I've been on flights various time's but never encountered so many people being so quiet in such a tight area. It was strange for me as I never thought a situation like that could have such a comfortable atmosphere. I always assumed silence with lots of people in a small space usually meant tension and awkwardness, however this time it didn't and it was strange but a comfortable silence. When I arrived at Helsinki airport I noticed how large and quiet it was. However, what hit me the most was the temperature and the amount of snow. The last time I had seen snow like that Ireland was essentially shut down and I found it very hard to believe how the colder country's could deal with it so easily. I was amazed how they had a perfectly and efficiently functioning transport system in such snowy and cold conditions. After getting a bus to Helsinki city centre, where I booked my hotel for the night before I set out to Keuda in the morning, I went around the city and into a grill house where I had my dinner. It was at the grill house I noticed how different things were here compared to Ireland. The first thing I noticed was that the place was nearly full and I would have assumed that it would have been quiet noisy. However when I got inside I was surprised to see that even in social gatherings it was very quiet apart for the music playing. I couldn't believe it that even at gatherings, in packed areas, it's not noisy. It was another odd moment for me because I have never been out in a packed placed and had it feel so quiet and comfortable whilst at the same time being in an atmosphere that was so relaxed. I was taken back so I did some quick sketches to try and capture the atmosphere before I left. |
