I gained a huge amount of experience whilst working abroad in a different country. I got to experience different lifestyles and ways of living and working. I got to learn many different skills which included methods in how to control and coach small groups, and I also improved skills I had already developed back in Ireland, such as my communication skills and planning skills. I also found it great to experience a new culture as it made me more aware of other nationalities and religions. I felt this placement did help me to develop factors like confidence and independence as I had to cook, wash and clean up for myself as I was living in an apartment. I met a lot of new people who were attending and coaching at the New Lanarkshire college. This experience will also prove to be very beneficial to me as it will look very good on my CV for future jobs and for when I want to apply for a coaching position in the future, as I will have the experience of working abroad where most people my age will not have had that opportunity.
This placement helped me develop confidence and independence as I had to look after myself for two weeks. I am normally a shy person before this placement. This experience allowed me to make many new friends abroad. By meeting new people I also got to learn about the culture of Glasgow and how they go about there daily lives. The one major thing that affected me while on this work placement was getting to work/train with professional football players and coaches. I learned many new things to bring into my football game back in GTI, not just as a player but as a coach too. Since I arrived back to Ireland I feel like I have progressed hugely in my own game because of the new training methods I have learned, including changing my diet around, how to prevent an inury, and not to overwork myself. Most importantly I learned to enjoy the game even more. I think this placement has really enhanced my CV because potential employers love to see that I can care for myself by living abroad for 2 weeks and that I have also worked within a different culture and learned new skills. Hopefully I can get a job within a sporting sector in the future and I have no doubt the Erasmus Programme will help me get it.
The Erasmus placement to Glasgow was very beneficial to me. I have never had the experience of working abroad, and due to the financial costs covered by Erasmus+ I was able to experience working life in a new country, and got to live a different way of life. Staying in the comfortable living conditions and arrangements for two weeks allowed me to adapt to a new culture easily and effectively. By the end of my time there I noticed how Independent I had become, as I learned how to stand on my own two feet. I gained a greater maturity as I had to make sure that I stuck to the strict timetable set out. I also noticed a change in my confidence when meeting new people, and I believe this will definitely stand to me when I am looking for a job. Although I did not have to speak a different language on my placement, it was difficult at times to understand the different accents, but by the middle of the trip I had improved my communication and language skills by speaking up more, and asking questions. I am now able to apply my time abroad to my Curriculum Vitae and hopefully this will benefit and enhance my job opportunities. This placement has hugely influenced my thoughts and plans for the future. I am very thankful for the opportunity I was given and I had a very pleasant and beneficial time overall.
Once I arrived home from our placement in Glasgow, I immediately felt a lot more confident in myself. Others have said to me that I seem a lot more confident in myself now after coming home from our placement. After learning a lot more about my own style of playing football and learning new skills from professional football players in Glasgow, I instantly started to believe more in myself in our college matches and even in training sessions. I can see that my vision of play and my awareness are now more alert and i’m able to judge my surroundings a lot easier thanks to all the advice I got during this placement.
This placement has also helped me gain new friends from not only my college course but from our host college in Glasgow. Most of us have stayed in contact with a few of the other students in Glasgow also. It also helped me develop new communication skills among the students in my course. Spending two weeks together has allowed us to get to know each other more and more each day that we were on our placement and we’ve started to connect and to play better as a team in our GTI college matches. This has been proven with our last few results. This placement has helped me personally also, as in my future I hope to go on and progress as a professional coach/footballer and this placement will look very good on my cv. Now employers can see that I can be trusted to go abroad and to be picked ahead of a lot of other students and to be able to adapt to new surroundings while abroad and to understand the new environment of working abroad.

I believe that this was a great opportunity for me to gain new experience and to learn new skills. My communication skills have improved greatly, which has made coaching in my local club a lot easier. I made a lot of new friends in Scotland who I keep in touch with and wouldn’t have met without the help of this programme. I found that Scottish people are so nice and are willing to help you with anything. I also learned a lot more about how to use different gym equipment. By doing this placement it will help me to get a job in the future in my chosen area. I think that I now have a greater advantage over someone who also wants the same job as me, thanks to this placement. I believe that my confidence has also grown and that my coaching has improved so much. Because I had the opportunty to train at such a high standard while on this placement, I believe that my own soccer skills have also improved. It has made me want to continue in my pursuit to become a soccer coach so that I can share with others the skills that I have learned.
I really enjoyed my experience in Glasgow. I learned a lot of new skills such as communication skills and interpersonal skills, and I improved these skills throughout my stay. Also within the two weeks I greatly improved my soccer skills, such as dribbling and passing skills with the help of the Glasgow New college Lanarkshire coaches who were by my side every step of the way. They gave me great advice on how to improve my soccer skills and they also helped in boosting my confidence while playing soccer tournaments. I learned to become even more independent throughout my stay in the Glasgow lofts as I had to cook and wash for myself which I found pretty easy. I made a lot of new friends also and they were all very friendly and helpful. It has made me realise that I definitely want my future career to be in the area of sport and fitness as it is an area that I am very passionate about.
I received a certificate at the end of my two weeks which will look very good on my CV when it comes to looking for a job in the area of sport and fitness in the future. I would love to go back to Broadwood again and stay for another 2-3 weeks if I had the chance. It was an amazing experience for me and gave me the chance to live independently.
