I thoroughly enjoyed the Erasmus experience. I really enjoyed and was grateful for the experience to work abroad. It really helped me build my confidence as a hairdresser. It helped my better my independence and helped me improve my social skills. I found it challenging to live and socialise with people i haven't met but i'm extremely happy i did it now as i have made some great friendships. I think this experience will highly improve my job opportunities as hairdressing is an extremely competitive profession and there is only a select amount of Erasmus students. I found it has really improved my communication skills and i am definitely more outgoing after my trip. I have improved my professional skills and practical skills and i think this will be extremely beneficial to me in coming years when i am looking for a job. I know better my strengths and weaknesses. Im also more tolerant to other people and more aware.
Glasgow was an amazing experience for me. I learned so many new skills, and I am more comfortable with meeting new people and doing certain techniques on my own. Before I went to Glasgow, I was very uncomfortable doing balayages hairstyles. I was never able to do them to the best of my ability and now I can't wait to do more. I learned a lot about colour that I didn't quite understand before, and I always thought that that would be my downfall in my hairdressing career.
The placement I attended was fantastic. The facilities were very modern and the building itself was a lot bigger. We took part in open days, it was interesting to see how dealt with clients compared to how we deal with new clients. I noticed different techniques that some of the students use, for example, when applying a root application, they apply the colour all around the hairline first, then take it in sections. The classes over there don’t just do hair, they do makeup too. I loved that we got the opportunity to do makeup with hair, it showed what a finished look was like and it makes the portfolio photos look more professional. I really like how the college focused on a lot of different areas, but i noticed one of its main focuses was on fantasy work. I really enjoyed that. I liked it so much that I actually applied to the college to do makeup, which is great because they do hairdressing too, so I’ll be kept up to date with new tends. We got to attend some barbering classes too, one of the men that is hoping to become a lecturer, took us aside for a private lesson and showed us so many different techniques. I found it really interesting because we do not do barbering in our course.
Travel was interesting, I would normally travel by car or bus to college, so traveling by train was a new experience. I liked that we had to do a good bit of walking to get from the hotel to the train station, then the train station to the college. Living in a hotel for 3 weeks wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was actually quite nice having the bed made everyday. The only down fall about living in a hotel, would be that we had to eat out all the time. Other then that, it was great. The hotel facilities were great. I spent a lot of my evenings in the swimming pool. Attending my placement in Glasgow was amazing. I would love to go back and continue my studies over there. I loved how independent I became and all the new skills I have learned. Overall, I loved every minute of it and thank you to Leargas and GTI for organising this placement.

Throughout the three weeks in Glasgow I feel like I really grew as a stylist and as a person. I definitely gained confidence in my skills and abilities. I feel so much more confident doing colour now, especially balayage and highlights. We got to learn whole new techniques for out of the box colour techniques (like ribbon technique and triangle technique). The college learned these methods from a Wella rep, so we wouldn’t have been able to get them back home since our college is a L’oreal salon. We got to learn some barbering techniques, like the fade. That was definitely one of my favourite workshops as we’d never had a class where we could use the clippers before. The make-up classes were really good as we learned some basic styles that could really help enhance the overall look of our models when we do up-styles or fantasy looks. I really enjoyed this the most, as this would definitely be what I’m most interested in.
As far as my personal skills go, I definitely grew as a person. I was a bit worried about sharing a room for three weeks, but it went really well. We learned how to communicate and work well with each other. I’m quite a shy and reserved person, and being thrown into a new placement environment in a new country meant I needed to be able to speak for myself. I thought that I was going to feel like a small fish in a big pond the whole time, but in Glasgow I definitely found my voice. I’ve lived by myself before, I wasn’t as worried about being homesick as some of the other girls were, but I did find the budgeting a bit challenging because we had to eat out all the time, however I managed to make the bursary last and I’m quite proud of myself for that.
The local cities are filled with history and I wish we had gotten around them both a bit more. I would definitely recommend people going in the future to take a full weekend out and stay in Edinburgh. Being in a big city is amazing, and I would love to go back there. The people are so friendly and even though we’ve barely been home a week, i’m missing it already. I loved every minute of the whole experience.

Throughout the three weeks I really learnt a lot from Glasgow. Glasgow really helped me with confidence and coming out of my shell. Having not been away from home before I was nervous but to be quite fair I don’t know why as I had the best time and I became more independent. I’ve realised that I am capable of living on my own and being able to live in a different country. In the college we got to learn new techniques that we hadn’t seen before especially in colour.
We were shown a new way of doing balayage and I was lucky enough to actually get to do it on a client there. The way it turned out was lovely and I was very happy with it. I’m delighted that I can bring that new skill home with me. I feel like we’ve learnt a lot over the three weeks and we’ve met so many nice people and definitely people I will stay in touch with.
Living in a hotel for three weeks was very different and sharing a room with someone even more, but to be honest it was great. I was sharing a room with Charley and we had some laugh. We’ve learnt a lot about each other over the three weeks. As we lived in a hotel we really had to budget because we had to eat out everyday. Overall Glasgow was amazing and I definitely will be going back. I’ve grown so much as a person and I have noticed it in myself and in my work. I loved Glasgow and the college that much that i’ve applied for a make-up course for September.

I found my placement extremely beneficial in a lot of different aspects such as I gained independence and confidence as it was the longest time that I ever stayed away from home. I had never gone away for a period of time without a family member, which made me quite self-reliant. I also learned that I can manage my own affairs and to work on my own initiative without any help from family and that gave me confidence to feel that I am equipped to live on my own which is something that I didn’t consider before this experience.
I also gained communications skills since I met new people everyday and I needed to be forward and friendly with them since I was in class or working with them, which gave me confidence to talk to new people everyday as I was a very quiet and shy person before this placement. Everyone that I met was so nice and friendly which made it a lot easier for me. I feel that I am now self-assured with going for a job in the field in which I studied in. I also feel that I have gotten a good sense of a new area which made me feel that I will definitely be travelling more and more in the future.

Going on my Erasmus + placement really benefitted me in many ways. For example, I got to learn new skills in my industry that we wouldn’t have the facilities to learn with in college at home. I thoroughly enjoyed being in the college in Glasgow as they had such contrasting learning methods and the way they do their course.
Since being on my Erasmus+ placement I definitely feel more confident doing beauty treatments as I got the opportunity to practise certain treatments that I wouldn’t have as much time to do at home. This placement helped me with my communication skills and interpersonal skills as I had to work alongside other people I have never met and also having to try and understand people with a much different accent that I would be used to hearing.
In the classes, everything was different from the way they set up to the way they do their work, so I had to use my own initiative to figure out where they keep everything and what I’ll need in my work area for the class and so on. It was a beautiful city and I am so glad I got this wonderful opportunity to see the different culture and how the beauty industry is in another country. It was quite a big city and I had to learn to navigate around it myself, this helped me to become more independent as I have lived in Galway all my life. This was my first trip abroad on my own and I’ve never had to do anything like this before. While being on Erasmus it has made me think a lot about how I want to go forward in my career in this industry for the future and it has helped clarify my job opportunities as this experience will definitely improve my employability in my sector.

Our three weeks in Glasgow was an amazing experience. I have learnt so many new skills and benefits. This trip was the first time away from home and I feel I have grown as a person in so many ways. I am now more independent and this experience showed me that I can go do things on my own. I have met so many new people and gained new friends. It has giving me the chance to experience different teachers and how they train their students with different methods. It has helped me with my team work skills and improving my communication skills. The college was amazing in Glasgow. It was very modern and well facilitated. It was good to get the chance to work in them facilities. This has definitely made me feel more comfortable in adjusting to different equipment once I get out into a real salon after college. In the college they had many different classes that applied to me. We got to go to some makeup artistry classes which inspired me to be more creative. It has made me more interested in following on to do a makeup/special effects course once I finish my course here in GTI. It has opened my eyes to many job opportunities in the future.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience working in the spa in Tenerife. I have more confidence in myself doing treatments on paying clients now, as majority of the clients were very satisfied with the treatments I did on them and I got a lot of tips. It was brilliant to meet and deal with so many nationalities every day. All the therapists in the spa had very little english so this forced me to use my basic knowledge of Spanish to communicate with them.
They were also very keen to learn english and enjoyed speaking to help improve their english. It was daunting at first, to be thrown in the deep end straight away on my first day and to be carrying out treatments on paying clients but it was the best way to learn and I had to grasp their way of doing things very quickly. Each day I was fully booked with various treatments such as massage, facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing. I feel very confident as a therapist now and I am excited to start working in a salon environment soon. I have improved many of my skills such as my communication skills, language skills and I have gained so much new knowledge that I will be able to use in the future. It has given me a great insight into what it is like to work in a proper salon environment and I am happy that I have chosen this as a future career and I feel like I have chosen the correct career path for myself. I loved meeting new people and I got on very well with the receptionist in the spa and she was able to tell me about her experiences working on a cruise ship, which is something I would love to do in the future.
