Today was our last day working in the hospital.
Yesterday and today I was assisting the nurse in the Outpatients surgical clinic.  Throughout my experience here I have seen how different sterile pieces of equipment are used for different procedures.  I have learnt so much from Anna (the nurse).
She is a great nurse and teacher and she has taught me so much about what it means to be a nursing assistant and gave me many wonderful opportunity to assist her in patients dressings. Thank you.

After clinic, my manager (Navise) brought me around the different departments of the hospital. She showed me the  x-ray department, CT Scan room, Physiotherapy department and the sterilisation room.  It was a great experience and very much appreciated.

As we have been doing infection control in our studies in GTI, it was good to see the sterilisation room and for Navise to explain to me what happens to the equipment from when it is brought in used and soiled, to the department and the whole process of decontamination, sterilisation and preparation of the equipment to be used again in the different departments and for the surgical team.  Navise is a wonderful teacher and mentor and the experience, knowledge and skills I have learnt are brilliant.

The doctors and the consultants have taught me so much about different medical conditions and took great time explaining these to me and also gave me many opportunities to assist them in dressings and procedures especially in the plastic surgery clinic.

I would like to say thank you to the secretary's for making me so welcome.  You are a great team.

I would like to thank the wonderful people in the Blood Bank specially to Ewa and Feli for giving me so many opportunities whilst working in the Blood bank and the centre of blood checking. A few days I was working with two lovely nurses in the office beside the kitchen. They were explaining to me and showing how to make a special diets for patients with allergies etc. I was visiting a different wards every day with them and I was watching all the process. It was very interesting for me.  All people here were very helpful and nice to me. I will be miss them.

We have been in Alcala de Henares 3 weeks and the time has just flown by. Both myself and Ewelina cannot thank the Erasmus team enough for giving us the opportunity to work in this beautiful hospital with such lovely people.  We return to Ireland tomorrow with a wealth of new knowledge, skills and experiences. which we have learnt here. This has been a great opportunity, and one which we will be help us progress in the workplace, in our studies and will help us in the future careers.

A big  thank you to Maria in Spain for being a wonderful host and for everyone in the hospital.
un gran gracias.

Post-Operative Procedures

Monday morning up at the crack of dawn to start work at 8 am.  Today many patients attend the outpatients surgical department for post operative  procedures.  Part of this is to have their bloods taken so that the whole team are aware of any underlying conditions which may cause any problems etc. Part of my duty today was to ensure the patients records were out, in alphabetical order and to add any new details which needed updating on the computer order to assist the senior administrator to write out the documents needed for the patients to take to the blood bank. In the outpatients team there are a number of administrators, nurses and consultants.  These in turn work directly with the records department, theatre staff, blood bank and post operative wards. Whilst working here I have seen first hand the importance of interpersonal communications, this has really helped me develop my communication skills and interpersonal skills with other team members.  A hospital department is alike a bridge, you need all the links to be stuck together to enable people to get safely from one place/department to another. Each day is a classroom day and we are gaining so much knowledge and learning new skills whilst we are working here and when we return home to Ireland we will be able to transfer this knowledge, skills and information to our workplace. It is strange that I work in Surgical Outpatients and Ewelina works in the Blood Bank.  Already we have two links in the bridge.  In the blood bank patents arrive from 8:30 to 11:00 for blood tests which can be for either routine checks, diabetics or post operative blood tests.  My role working in the blood bank is to print out the record cards for each patient.  This is then handed to the nurse who takes the blood and sends it to the labs.  When patients arrive who have diabetics the same procedure applies but they have to come each week to determine what amount of tablets should be given and the dosage. I have had great opportunities to observe the senior nurse taking blood from the patients and the procedures she follows to maintain strict infection control and hygiene.

Culture weekend- Madrid

At the weekend we went to Madrid. This was our second time in the capital. The first time we were there with Maria- our coordinator from Spain. That day Maria showed us the most beautiful places in Madrid. It was very nice to see, so me and Christina decided to go there on Saturday and Sunday. We managed to see a lot but not everything so we will be back.

Madrid is the capital and largest city in Spain and is in the middle of Spain. Seven million people live in the community. It is the third largest city in the European Union. It has four important football teams: Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Getafe and Rayo Vallecano. Although it is a modern city, a lot of its history can be seen and felt as one walks along the streets and in the large squares of the city. There are beautiful parks, famous building, art galleries and concert halls. I would invite anyone to walk around beautiful Madrid.

Today started with working in the pharmaceutical department for Ewelina and working in the vascular outpatients department for Christina. My supervisor/host at hospital Ewa is a manager of pharmacy sector. Yesterdy she was showing me all the places around and common with pharmaceutical sector. It was a great opportunity to have seen at the first time how drugs are made. I was watching and observing a nurses working in a special lab. We had to wear a special aprons, mask and gloves.  I was very intrested about this new experience and I was asking them a lot of questions during the work. I found out that this work is very responsible. People must do everything very carefully and with  highest standards. This experience has brought my understanding of the huge amount of work which goes into making pharmaceutical work as I currently work at Galway hospital. This is was great experience for me.

Whilst working in the vascular outpatients clinic I was given an opportunity to observe and assist the nurse in attending to patients dressings who had undergone surgery to address ulcers on their legs. Seeing the open wound was  very challenging as they were very raw and sore looking. The nurse very supportive and talked me through  what it was I was looking at and when she put it into medical terms it gave me a different vision on what I was looking at.  This was very good and from then on when I looked at an open wound I was able to see and recognise the wound for what it was and to be more mindful of the importance of not showing how I felt (shocked) in front of the patient.  I had to remember that my sight saw the pain/soreness of the wound but they were feeling it and this was a very important lesson to learn and one that will help me in my future.

This is a picture of my mentor Navise.  She is learning English in the hospital with a gentleman from Ireland which is fantastic to see the Irish link within the hospital.  She is a fabulous teacher and giving me wonderful support and helping me to speak Spanish to other members of the team and with the patients.

Administration Work...

Wednesday is a very busy day in the clinic with a number of consultants seeing outpatients.  Today was a day of updating patients files and updating the database and other administration and office work which all helps to maintain a well run clinic. It is all very good experience in using different computer programmes and systems. This morning a consultant demonstrated how they use equipment to help a patient who has had major stomach surgery to heal quicker and more effectively. In the afternoon I assisted the nurse in attending to patients dressings and updating the medical equipment in all the consultants rooms.  Using the electronic beds was different but again good experience.

February 14th...

This morning was a very hectic morning due to a patient emergency in the clinic.  I experienced first hand the importance of maintaining calmness when working in an outpatients department.  The staff were very quick to react to the situation and I learnt a lot from all members of the team.  A fantastic opportunity.

In the afternoon  I assisted the nurse in attending to patients conditions who had had surgery in relation to leg ulcers and stomach operations.  As it is my intention to work in the main hospitals when I qualify as a Healthcare assistant I found this experience to be outstanding. The doctors and nurses are very good at explaining procedures. Many people attend the blood bank department and it is always very busy with in patients, people giving blood and blood samples being brought in from the ward.

In the evening a trip to Madrid was called for and going on the metro and bus was an adventure. The metro is wonderful and so straight forward.  Once again the people in Madrid were very helpful in giving directions  to the right station and tube.

Today started early at 7:45 am as we start work at 8 am in the hospital.  Ewelina is working in the Blood Bank and it is very interesting work.   She meets lots of new people each day giving blood.  This is the main centre for blood tests/donations which have been taken from patients within the hospital. After the people have donated blood they are given  a sandwich and juice to help them recover from giving blood.  She was also told by her supervisor that Spain has the highest amount of people donating blood and organs in the world.  This is absolutely fantastic. Christina is working in the surgical outpatients clinic and is also meeting many patients and consultants.  She had the opportunity to assist the nurse in attending to a patient who has had a major stomach operation.  This was such an amazing opportunity and the people are so lovely in the Blood Bank and the Outpatients departments. We finish at 3  pm and so return  back to the apartment. We are looking forward to tomorrow as each day brings new challenges and experiences here in Madrid.

This has been an exciting week.  It's hard to think that a week today we were getting ready for our trip to Madrid. It has been been amazing.  On our first trip to the college we were made so welcome and given a tour of the school by the principle and the tutors.  The school offers such fantastic facilities and amenities for Healthcare and Nursing students and offers complete inclusion to all pupils.  We met a lot of the students and staff and will hopefully meet them again later on this year when they come to Galway.
Madrid is a wonderful city and our hosts showed us lots of land marks and historical places and wonderful Spanish cuisine.
We have started work at the Hospital Universitario Principe de Asturias.  We have worked in different departments learning new skills and experiences.  All the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.  We have learn a lot of new skills including assisting the nurse, observing treatments and diagnosis, updating  patients records and maintaining strict confidentiality at all times.  Erasmus has given us the opportunity to learn a lot about Healthcare and nursing in Madrid and we look forward next week when we continue with our work in different areas and hopefully take in more special landmarks around the area.

Day in Alcala de Henares...

Hola :) We started today at 10am with a visit to the University Hospital in Alcala de Henares- our work placement. We met our manager, who is responsible for training new staff in the hospital.  We were given our uniforms and keys to the lockers in the changing rooms. We start work at the hospital tomorrow at
8 am till 3 pm. So early to bed tonight :)

In the afternoon we went to Alcala de Henares. This is a lovely historical town with many fine buildings and lovely shops. We saved lots of money as we discovered that the shops closed at 2pm for the siesta and didn't open until 5:30pm :)

As we walked around the town we noticed a lot of Irish influences in and around the area.  We spoke with Spanish people and we were pleasantly surprised to hear they had worked in Galway and in different parts of Ireland.  We also found a street which was called the Plaza de Los Irelandeses.  In our free time we would like to find out more about this street.

This town offers many cultural shows like opera, theater and plays.  Hopefully we will have the opportunity to see a Spanish Opera.
